The Course overview block shows a list of all courses in which a user is enrolled/has an assigned role.
By default this block appears in the central content block on the dashboard, but you can move the block to the left or right column.
It is possible for a Site Administrator to set the defaults and lock certain fields for the Course overview block. To do this you will need to go to Quick-access menu > Plugins > Blocks > Manage blocks, then click Settings next to the block.

Default maximum courses | Determine how many courses can be displayed in the block. | Entering '0' for this setting will show all courses in the block. |
Force maximum courses | Enabling this setting means users cannot control how many courses display in the block. | By default this setting is not enabled, meaning learners can control how many courses are displayed. |
Show children | Shows child courses under main course titles. | - |
Show welcome area | Shows the welcome area above the course list. This shows a welcome message, the user's profile picture, and any unread messages. | - |
Categories to show | Determine which courses are shown. Three options are available on the dropdown list:
