# Capability overview

Capabilities in Totara determine the actions a user can take on the system. It is important to know that the permissions and capabilities of each [role](/18/docs/what-are-roles) can be customised. This means any role may have a different range of capabilities on your site compared to the default setup.

To check the capabilities for a role, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Q**uick-access menu > Permissions > Capability overview*.
2. Select one or more capabilities from the **Capability** setting.
3. Select one or more roles from the **Roles** setting.
4. Click **Get the overview**.

The results will be displayed in a grid, and cells will say **Allow** when the role has the corresponding capability.
