# Add competencies to a program

Competencies are a legacy content type for programs in Totara 19. If you want to add competencies to a program, go to *Quick-access menu > Configure features > Learn settings* and check the **Enable legacy program content** setting.

When [creating a program](/19/docs/create-a-program), you will need to [add the content](/19/docs/adding-program-content) you want learners to complete.

If you want to add competencies to your program, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the program and select the **Content** tab.
2. Select **Competency** from the **Add a new** dropdown menu and click **Add**.
3. **Browse** through the competency framework(s) or **Search** for a specific competency. Note that you can only add competencies with linked courses.
4. Click on the name of the competency to be added.
5. The selected competency will be displayed at the top of the dialogue box.
6. Click **Ok** to complete the competency selection or **Cancel** to exit.
7. Complete the [competency set settings](/19/docs/program-competency-set-settings).
8. Repeat steps 2-7 to add another **Competency**.
9. Select **Save changes**.

Courses linked to the selected competency will automatically be added to the set.
