On the **Content** tab of a certification you can define the courses that Learners will be required to complete to gain and maintain the certification. If you add multiple sets, you can then use set dividers (see below) to create of sequences or dependencies between each set. > [!WARNING] > Note: We recommend that you do not use courses in your **certification** **Course sets** where those courses have completion criteria based on [**Completion of other courses**](/totara-20/docs/course-completion-settings). When the recertification window opens, only courses in the certification are reset. The other course would remain complete, so the certification course can be marked complete again straight away using the original completion date. This can cause repeated recertification, incorrect certification dates and a large build-up of completion records. > > If learners need to complete the other course again, add it to the certification’s course set instead. ## Original certification path When adding **Original certification** content to a certification, open the **Content** tab in the relevant certification and follow the below steps: 1. Select **Set of courses** from the **Add a new** dropdown menu and click **Add**. 2. **Browse** through the course categories or **Search** for a specific course. Note that if completion tracking is not enabled for a course, that course will not be available to add to a certification. 3. Click on the name of each course to be added. 4. Selected course(s) appear in the **Items to add** area. 5. Click **Ok** to complete the course selection or **Cancel** to exit. 6. Complete the [course set settings](/19/docs/certification-course-set-settings) as described below. 7. Repeat steps 1-7 to add another **Set of courses**. 8. Select **Save changes**. After you have set up the initial certification path, you can [configure the recertification path](/19/docs/configure-the-recertification-path). Select courses in the order they should appear in the set. A delete icon to remove a course from the certification selection will appear on hover over. As part of a certification, learners complete a number of courses. Certifications archive the learner's work and grades in each course and then resets the activities so the learner can complete the same courses again when it's time to recertify. ![Certification content tab.](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1638974757691.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A35%3A26Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A35%3A26Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=GdVYiffrF1%2BbxbqMCaKORhkwqLJU94lW3RNzJSn2K8M%3D) ## Set dividers When adding multiple sets of courses or more than one competency to a certification, conditional dividers or access rules can be added between sets. Choose from: - **Or:** Learners can either complete the learning in the first course/competency set or the second course/competency set, the learning of both course/competency sets is available at the same time - **Then:** Learners must complete the first course/competency set before being given access to the second course/competency set - **And:** If both course/competency sets need to be completed ## Next steps - [Configure the recertification path](/19/docs/configure-the-recertification-path) ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_programs-and-certifications.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A35%3A26Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A35%3A26Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=GdVYiffrF1%2BbxbqMCaKORhkwqLJU94lW3RNzJSn2K8M%3D)The Totara Academy has a whole course dedicated to using [Programs and certifications](https://totara.community/mod/page/view.php?id=22023) in Totara Learn.
