# AI course tag recommendations

You can enable and use AI tag recommendations for courses. This feature uses a Totara integration with OpenAI to recommend tags to add to each course, based on the information included within that course. This tool will only suggest existing tags, and will not create new ones. If you have tags in multiple languages, this tool will only suggest tags in the user's preferred language.

In order to use this feature you must first have an [OpenAI API account](https://openai.com/api/). Usage of this API will incur additional costs. Please refer to the API service for more details.To use this feature you must first enable it in [**Experimental settings**](/19/docs/experimental-features). Navigate to *Quick-access menu > Development > Experimental > Experimental settings* (/admin/settings.php?section=experimentalsettings). Additionally, at least three course tags must exist on your site.

When this experimental feature is enabled, follow these steps to set up your OpenAI API account with Totara:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Development > Experimental > Artificial intelligence > OpenAI* (/integrations/ai/index.php).
2. Add your OpenAI API details.
3. Click **Save changes**.

Then, follow these steps to add tags to a course using the AI recommender:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Courses and categories* and select the course for which you want to add course tags. Note that this feature is not available when initially creating a course, and will only reference content already saved to the page.
2. Click **Edit** to edit the course settings.
3. Scroll down and expand the **Tags** section.
4. Click **Generate tags**.
5. Select the tags you wish to add to the course, or click **Regenerate tags** if you want to see more suggestions.
6. Click **Save and display**.

You can create a report using the **AI interaction logs** [report source](/19/docs/report-sources) to review the usage of features by AI interactions.
