You can assign a performance activity to specific [positions](/19/docs/what-are-positions) or [organisations](/19/docs/what-are-organisations) by following these steps: 1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Activity management.* 2. Click the activity to which you wish to assign users. 3. On the **Assignments** tab, click **Assign users**. 4. Select **Position** or **Organisation** from the dropdown list. 5. Select the position(s) or organisation(s) you wish to assign by ticking the box in front of them. You can select any number of positions or organisations. 6. Click **Add**. Your selections will now be displayed on the **Assignments** tab. You can freely add or remove positions and organisations once the activity is **Active** (i.e. [it has been activated](/19/docs/activate-a-performance-activity)). You can edit your positions and organisations after assigning them to a performance activity. If a position or organisation is removed then any subject and participant instances that have been created will be unaffected. If a user is removed from the position or organisation with an assigned performance activity then no new instances will be created.A user can only be assigned once, i.e. if they appear in multiple assigned organisations or positions, they are still only assigned to a performance activity once. ## Next steps - [Assign a performance activity to an audience](/19/docs/assign-a-performance-activity-to-an-audience) - [Assign a performance activity to an individual](/19/docs/assign-a-performance-activity-to-an-individual) - [Add external participants](/19/docs/add-external-participants-to-a-performance-activity) - [Activate a performance activity](/19/docs/activate-a-performance-activity) ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_appraisals-in-totara-perform(3).svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T14%3A49%3A13Z&se=2026-11-01T15%3A49%3A13Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=nNKDzKMlSmkNMx0wvB%2Bzu%2FWZIAvfqnCZs6%2FlYHqQM4A%3D) Get involved in the conversation about [Performance management](https://totara.community/container/type/workspace/workspace.php?id=546) in the Totara Community.
