# Assign types to competencies

Once you have set up your [competency types](/19/docs/create-a-competency-type), you can associate competencies (also known as competency items) with them.

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Competencies.*
2. Click the name of the competency framework you want to work in.
3. In the **Actions** column, click the cog icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1641828519708.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T17%3A02%3A06Z&se=2026-11-01T18%3A02%3A06Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=d%2BEY0nIldGtGBMDpXRgFUJ%2FgUBfw9XQSepyGs4WjRaY%3D)) for the competency item.
4. Alongside the **Type** setting, click **Change type**.
5. Next to the type you wish to reclassify, click **Choose**.
6. Click **Reclassify items** to confirm your selection.
7. Click **Save changes** in the competency items settings.
