# Clone a certification

Instead of [creating a new certification](/19/docs/create-a-certification), you may want to duplicate an existing certification. Any users with the **Clone certification (totara/program:clonecertification)** capability can duplicate a certification. To duplicate a certification, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the certification (e.g. via the catalogue or *Quick-access menu > Certifications*).
2. Click **Edit certification details**.
3. Click **Clone certification**.
4. Select the components you want to copy from the following:
  - **Copy details** (if this isn't checked then the default settings will be used)
  - **Copy content**
  - **Copy notifications**
5. Click **Clone**.

Note that certification assignments and completion records cannot be duplicated.

If you have the **Edit certification** capability you can now configure the new certification as required (users without this capability will instead see the **Overview** tab). By default the new certification will be hidden. You can now update the **Full name** and **Short name**, and give the certification a new **Certification** **ID**.
