# Clone a program

Instead of [creating a new program](/19/docs/create-a-program), you may want to duplicate an existing program. Any users with the **Clone program (totara/program:cloneprogram)** capability can duplicate a program. To duplicate a program, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the program (e.g. via the catalogue or *Quick-access menu > Programs*).
2. Click **Edit program details**.
3. Click **Clone program**.
4. Select the components you want to copy from the following:
  - **Copy details**
  - **Copy content**
  - **Copy notifications**
5. Click **Clone**.

Note that program assignments and completion records cannot be duplicated.

If you have the **Edit program** capability you can now configure the new program as required (users without this capability will instead see the **Overview** tab). By default the new program will be hidden. You can now update the **Full name** and **Short name**, and give the program a new **Program ID**.
