The [certification path](/19/docs/adding-certification-content) outlines the content learners will need to complete on their first go, and the recertification path outlines the content learners will need to complete in order to recertify. You may want to create a recertification path which requires learners to complete the same learning as the original path, a subset of the courses from the original path, or a set of entirely new content. To configure the recertification path for a certification, follow these steps: 1. Go to the certification and select the **Content** tab. 2. Scroll down to the **Recertification path** section. 3. Select the **Use the existing certification content** checkbox to use the same content as the **Original certification** **path**. This will copy everything from the **Original certification path** into the **Recertification path**. 4. Select **Set of courses** from the **Add a new** dropdown menu and click **Add**. 5. **Browse** through the course categories or **Search** for a specific course. 6. Click on the name of each course to be added. 7. Selected course(s) appear in the **Items to add** area. 8. Click **Ok** to complete the course selection or **Cancel** to exit. 9. Complete the [course set settings](/19/docs/certification-course-set-settings). 10. Repeat steps 1-9 to add another **Set of courses**. 11. Select **Save changes**. 12. A warning message containing the number of learners who are currently assigned to the certification that would be affected by changes is displayed. Click **Save all changes**. Note that if you use the **Use the existing certification content** setting, the certification content will only be copied once. If a change is made to one path after the recertification path has been created, the same change will need to be made manually to the other path in order to keep them the same. ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_programs-and-certifications.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A45%3A39Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A45%3A39Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=8ZAs%2F6phK%2Fwi%2F1mGdEo%2Bvx2y5wZL%2FXb7xKdOYQzOi%2BA%3D)The Totara Academy has a whole course dedicated to using [Programs and certifications](https://totara.community/mod/page/view.php?id=22023) in Totara Learn.
