A course is typically a single page broken into sections by topics or weeks with links to the activities and resources learners need to complete. As a Site Administrator, Site Manager, or Course Creator you can create new courses by following these steps: 1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Courses and categories*. 2. Choose the [**category**](/19/docs/what-are-categories) you want your course to belong to (this can be changed later). 3. Select the **Create new course** link. 4. If your site has [content marketplaces](/19/docs/what-are-content-marketplaces) enabled, select **Create a multi-activity course**. 5. Complete the mandatory [course settings](/19/docs/course-settings). 6. Click **Save Changes.** **[Embedded content](https://www.youtube.com/embed/EEUs68MbvAw?&wmode=opaque&rel=0)** For more information on adding courses from a marketplace, such as GO1, please see the [content marketplaces documentation](/19/docs/what-are-content-marketplaces). Alternatively, as a Site Administrator, Site Manager or Course Creator you can create new courses via the [catalogue](/19/docs/what-is-the-catalogue): 1. Select **Explore** in the main menu. 2. Select **Create** and choose **Course** from the dropdown list. 3. Complete the mandatory [course settings](/19/docs/course-settings). 4. Click **Save changes.** **![Creating courses via the catalogue.](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1641310449495.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A45%3A17Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A45%3A17Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=76BS8F3oKl1KMdeUY%2FAnGys5BjOpnNl6QGXezfZwjJ8%3D)** ## Next steps - [Add a course activity or resource](/19/docs/add-a-course-activity-or-resource) - [Managing course content](/19/docs/manage-course-content) - [Adding users to courses](/19/docs/adding-users-to-courses) - [Assign roles in a course](/19/docs/assign-roles-to-enrolled-users) ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_courses-and-categories(2).svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A45%3A17Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A45%3A17Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=76BS8F3oKl1KMdeUY%2FAnGys5BjOpnNl6QGXezfZwjJ8%3D)The Totara Academy has a whole course dedicated to using [Courses and categories](https://totara.community/mod/page/view.php?id=22080) in Totara.
