In other words, the lesson tool can be used for a decision-tree approach to learning. Since the learner's pathway through the lesson activity could be quite complex, it is important to plan your lesson. Follow these steps to create a lesson: 1. Click **Turn editing on**. 2. Select **Lesson** from the **Add an activity...** menu. 3. Customise the available [settings](/19/docs/lesson-activity-settings). 4. Click **Save and display** so you can start adding pages (or **Save and return to course page** to finish editing). ## Next steps - [Add content pages to a lesson activity](/19/docs/add-content-pages-to-a-lesson-activity) - [Add a question to a lesson activity](/19/docs/add-a-question-to-a-lesson-activity) - [Manage lesson pages](/19/docs/manage-lesson-activity-pages) ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_Lesson.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A35%3A31Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A35%3A31Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=Smx3VXL0DwTEdC0Zcvj2EcvUFP4h5jc3Edqn613VyLI%3D)The Totara Academy has a whole course dedicated to using the [Lesson activity](https://totara.community/course/view.php?id=433) in Totara.
