# Create an approval workflow type

When using [approval workflows](/19/docs/what-are-approval-workflows) you can set up multiple workflow types. For example, if there are different forms within your organisation that you wish to represent, these could each be a different workflow type. Workflow types also enable some types of aggregated reporting across different workflows that share a type.

To create a new workflow type, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu* *> Manage approval workflows* (/mod/approval/workflow/index.php).
2. Click the icon of three dots (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1733326480905.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T14%3A47%3A55Z&se=2026-11-01T15%3A47%3A55Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=XcshNZR3bk9CifYd0yctc9HP3adEEzPMLu6LzfwTJ8A%3D)), then select **Manage workflow types**.
3. Click **Add workflow type**.
4. Give the new workflow a **Workflow t****ype name**. This must be unique.
5. Optionally add a **Description** to give a more detailed outline of the scope or purpose of the workflow type.
6. Click **Save changes**.

You will then be taken back to the **Manage approval workflow types** page, where you can view and manage your workflow types. To edit an existing workflow type, click the pencil icon (![edit](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/edit.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T14%3A47%3A55Z&se=2026-11-01T15%3A47%3A55Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=XcshNZR3bk9CifYd0yctc9HP3adEEzPMLu6LzfwTJ8A%3D)).
