# Edit an evidence type

Once you have [created an evidence type](/19/docs/add-an-evidence-type) you may wish to make changes.

You can edit an evidence type by following these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Evidence.*
2. Click the pencil icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/edit.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T23%3A08%3A46Z&se=2026-11-02T00%3A08%3A46Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=6iC9SNgEWKX9xxdal6NoooiuUF0Glgnt32TiN3A9oYk%3D)) next to the evidence type you wish to edit.
3. Make your desired changes to the settings.
4. Click **Save changes**.

You can edit the general settings by clicking the **General** tab. Alternatively, you can edit any custom fields by clicking the **Custom fields** tab and then clicking the cog icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/cog.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T23%3A08%3A46Z&se=2026-11-02T00%3A08%3A46Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=6iC9SNgEWKX9xxdal6NoooiuUF0Glgnt32TiN3A9oYk%3D)) next to the custom field you wish to edit.

Once an evidence type is being used for an evidence item it cannot be edited or deleted.

There is a legacy evidence type (Legacy completion import) for either certifications or courses imported from the Totara Learn 12 system that cannot be edited or deleted (for data integrity purposes).
