# Main menu settings

When [adding or editing a main menu item](/19/docs/edit-main-menu-items), you can configure the following settings.

| **Setting** | **Description** | **Notes** |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Type | Choose either: - **URL:** A link to another site/ page - **Parent:** A heading that will have other items below it | This will only appear when adding a new item. |
| Parent item | The item this menu item will sit under. Use the dropdown menu to choose from the existing top-level menu items. Select **Top** if you do not want this item to sit under another item. | - |
| Menu title | The name of the menu item. This field supports the multi-language content filter. | - |
| Icon | Select a small icon to display to the menu item when using the [Inspire theme](/19/docs/inspire-theme-settings). | - |
| Custom CSS class | Enter a CSS class to apply to the menu item. | - |
| Visibility | Select from: - **Show** - **Hide** - **Use custom access rules** | You can see more on setting up a [custom access rule for a main menu item](/19/docs/custom-access-rule-for-main-menu-item) on the dedicated page. |
| Menu URL address | Start the URL with a forward slash (**/**) to make the link relative to your site URL. Otherwise start the URL with http:// or https://, i.e. http://extdomain.com You can also use following placeholders: - ##userid## : Current user ID - ##username## : Current username - ##useremail## : Current user email - ##courseid## : Current course ID | This will only appear when the **Type** has been set to **URL**. |
| Open link in new window | If selected, clicking this menu item will open the page in a new browser window instead of the current window. | This will only appear when the **Type** has been set to **URL**. |
