Each notification displays the title and when the notification was received. Note that the [**Web** message output](/19/docs/message-outputs) type supports in-app notifications in addition to in-browser notifications. Tapping a notification will show the notification's full content, including any text and a call to action if required. For notifications with a call to action, tapping the button will take the user to the appropriate place in the app (or the webview), or open Totara in a web browser to complete the required action. When tapping a link in a notification, the user will be taken to the relevant content in the following ways: - Mobile-friendly courses will open in the native app view - Non-mobile-friendly courses will open in the mobile browser - The following will open in the webview in the app: - Certifications - Programs - Activities - Performance activities - Competencies - Workspaces - Resources - Playlists ## Push notifications Push notifications are also displayed on the smartphone's lock screen, with notifications showing a snippet of the in-app message. Tapping a notification will open the notification in the app. To send push notifications you will need to configure the Totara AirNotifier plugin on your site. You can find out more in the [message outputs documentation](/19/docs/message-outputs). We also recommend that you [test your push notifications](/19/docs/test-mobile-push-notifications) to ensure that they are working as expected. You can find more information in the [Totara AirNotifier developer documentation](https://help.totaralearning.com/display/DEV/Push+notifications+%28AirNotifier%29).The **Alert block** [message output](/19/docs/message-outputs) must also be enabled in order for AirNotifier push notifications to work. Push notifications cannot be sent to users who are not logged in. This is different from in-app notifications, which mirror those accessed via the bell icon on your desktop/browser version of Totara, and will be available in-app after logging in. ![A push notification shown on the lock screen.](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1636388020983.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T15%3A49%3A52Z&se=2026-11-01T16%3A49%3A52Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=t8UpbVGPzwzQBcDIoVCW8AkdNTEXHHqEYbng3hWwNco%3D) ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_totara-mobile-app.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T15%3A49%3A52Z&se=2026-11-01T16%3A49%3A52Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=t8UpbVGPzwzQBcDIoVCW8AkdNTEXHHqEYbng3hWwNco%3D)TWhy not visit the Totara Academy for our latest course on [Totara mobile app](https://totara.community/mod/page/view.php?id=23591).
