# Restrict access based on groupings

If [groups](/19/docs/what-are-groups) and [groupings](/19/docs/create-groupings) have been set up in the course, it is possible to restrict access to an activity to learners who belong to a group within a specified grouping.

1. Navigate to the course and select **Turn editing on**.
2. Click **Edit** next to the activity for which you want to restrict access.
3. Expand the **Restrict access** section and click **Add restriction**.
4. Select **Grouping**.
5. You can select whether the learner **must** or **must not** match the specified completion criteria.
6. Select the relevant **Grouping** from the dropdown menu.
7. Then select **Save and display** or **Save and return to course** to confirm your selection.

You can also click the **X** delete icon to cancel without saving.
