After configuring the required settings and assigning the activity to users you will need to activate the activity. There are two ways to activate an activity, as detailed below. Note that the although the **Activate** option may be available, until you have added at least one question element and responding participant relationship per section and assigned users to the activity you will not be able to activate it, and will instead receive a warning saying it cannot be activated. Elements such as the **Response redisplay** element, which do not require a response, are not sufficient to activate an activity. ## From the activity management page This is the best option if you simply wish to activate the activity. 1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Activity management.* 2. Click the icon of three dots (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/three_dots.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T19%3A20%3A54Z&se=2026-11-01T20%3A20%3A54Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=t9HfY9S%2FPFjv7P75ch3%2FzdwcMN%2BKusdaEiOIlvAB3C8%3D)) next to the draft activity you wish to activate. 3. Select **Activate** from the dropdown list. Now on the **Manage performance activities** page the status of the activity will be displayed as **Active**. ## From within an activity This is the best option if you wish to edit the activity and then activate it. 1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Activity management.* 2. Click the name of the activity you wish to edit and activate. 3. Click the **A****ctivate** button in the banner above the tabs. ## Next steps - [View your own performance activities](/totara-20/docs/view-your-own-performance-activities-1) - [View performance activities about others](/totara-20/docs/view-performance-activities-about-others-1) - [Complete a performance activity](/totara-20/docs/complete-a-performance-activity-1) ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_appraisals-in-totara-perform(3).svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T19%3A20%3A54Z&se=2026-11-01T20%3A20%3A54Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=t9HfY9S%2FPFjv7P75ch3%2FzdwcMN%2BKusdaEiOIlvAB3C8%3D) Get involved in the conversation about [Performance management](https://totara.community/container/type/workspace/workspace.php?id=546) in the Totara Community.
