# Add a course activity or resource

When preparing your course for use you will want to add some type of content: activities (interactive tools that usually require learners' participation) or course resources (typically passive content that a learner can read/access).

You can also control access to activities and resources using the [restrict access](/totara-20/docs/restricting-access-to-course-activities) feature or monitor course progress with [activity completion](/totara-20/docs/activity-completion).

To add an activity or resource to a course, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the course.
2. Click **Turn editing on**. If you are using the [**Pathway** course format](/totara-20/docs/pathway-course-format), instead go to *Administration > Course administration > Manage sections and activities*.
3. In the section you want to add the content to, click **Add an activity or resource**.
4. Select the [activity/resource type](/totara-20/docs/course-activity-types) from the list, then **Add**.
5. Configure the activity settings, then click **Save and display** or **Save and return to course**.

All activities and resources are also available in the [Totara Mobile app](/totara-20/docs/what-is-totara-mobile). Please note that activities and resources may work slightly differently in the app compared to on a desktop site.
