# Add a main menu item

The [main menu](/totara-20/docs/what-is-the-main-menu) comes with a number of [default menu items](/totara-20/docs/main-menu-defaults). However, if required you can also add your own custom menu items.

To add an item to the main menu, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Navigation > Main menu.*
2. Click **Add new menu item**.
3. Configure the [settings](/totara-20/docs/main-menu-settings) to your preferences.
4. Click **Add**.

If you have selected **Use custom access rules** for the **Visibility** setting you can then set the access controls, following the instructions on the [Custom access rule for main menu item](/totara-20/docs/custom-access-rule-for-main-menu-item) page from step 5.
