# Add content to a performance activity

Once you have [created a performance activity](/totara-20/docs/create-a-performance-activity-1), you can start adding the required content.

To add content, follow these steps:

1. Select the **Content** tab.
2. Click **Add section** to add as many sections as you require. Alternatively you can add a new section above a specific section by clicking the icon of three dots ( ![three_dots(1)](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/three_dots(1).png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A12%3A06Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A12%3A06Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=6n7kB0ppc8vesV2L%2BLZ08Oj8kVvZfR2ePCCCvJArThs%3D)), then clicking **Add section above**.
3. For each section, click the pencil icon ( ![pencil_edit_icon](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/pencil_edit_icon.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A12%3A06Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A12%3A06Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=6n7kB0ppc8vesV2L%2BLZ08Oj8kVvZfR2ePCCCvJArThs%3D)), then give the section a name. Then click the plus icons ( ![plus_box_icon](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/plus_box_icon.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A12%3A06Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A12%3A06Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=6n7kB0ppc8vesV2L%2BLZ08Oj8kVvZfR2ePCCCvJArThs%3D)) to add the responding participants and view-only participants for the section. Click **Done** to finish editing the section.
4. Click **Edit content elements** to add content to a section.
5. Click **Add element**, then select a [content or question type](/totara-20/docs/performance-activity-content-and-question-types-1) from the dropdown list.
6. Complete the required fields for the chosen question type.
7. Optionally enter a **Reporting ID** if you want questions to be related and marked together (find out more on the [Related questions](/totara-20/docs/related-questions-1) page).
8. Click **Save**.
9. Repeat steps 5-8 to add more questions to the current section, then navigate back to the activity page using the breadcrumbs at the top of the page. Click **Edit content elements** for the next section, add the questions and content, and repeat until all sections have the required content.

If a question is marked as required then it needs to be completed to submit the section in which it sits. If a question is not mandatory then the section can be submitted without answering the question.

Note that participants will not be warned if they have not completed any optional questions when submitting a section.

If a section has more than one question you can change the question order by dragging and dropping each question. Hover your mouse over a question, and when the crosshair icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1634121341974.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A12%3A06Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A12%3A06Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=6n7kB0ppc8vesV2L%2BLZ08Oj8kVvZfR2ePCCCvJArThs%3D)) appears in the top-left corner you can click and drag the question to its new position within the section.
