# Assign types to skills

Once you have set up your [skill types](/totara-20/docs/create-a-competency-type), you can associate skills (also known as skill items) with them.

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Skills.*
2. Click the name of the skill framework you want to work in.
3. In the **Actions** column, click the cog icon ( ![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-5QB6SOAS.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T07%3A05%3A45Z&se=2026-11-06T08%3A05%3A45Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=4cpoDGH%2FoBgCzGunexwEs6K9igRaU9CjztPB68IYc9w%3D) ) for the skill item.
4. Alongside the **Type** setting, click **Change type**.
5. Next, click **Choose** for the type you wish to reclassify.

6. Click **Reclassify items** to confirm your selection.
7. Click **Save changes** in the skill items settings.
