These capabilities determine whether or not the selected user is allowed to perform associated tasks within the system or in another context. To check a user's permissions, follow these steps: 1. Go to *Quick-access menu >* *Users > Permissions > Check system permissions*. 2. Enter the user's name into the **Search** field and press **Enter.** 3. Select the user from the list. 4. Click **Show this user’s permissions**. A list of all permissions for the selected user is displayed. Use the filter to search the permissions list. ![Checking the permissions for a user, with a filter applied to show permissions related to programs.](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1727449405953.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A41%3A48Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A41%3A48Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=oz7T8ruxqHVuSjgaewBTUalN7o087lYaI5iMbuNEafA%3D) ## Next steps - [Capability overview](/totara-20/docs/capability-overview) - [Edit a role](/totara-20/docs/edit-a-role) Join the [Totara Community](https://totara.community/) for more resources to help you get the most out of Totara. © Copyright 2025 Totara Learning Solutions.
