# Clone a program

Instead of [creating a new program](/totara-20/docs/create-a-program-1-1), you may want to duplicate an existing program. Any users with the **Clone program (totara/program:cloneprogram)** capability can duplicate a program. To duplicate a program, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the program either by:
  1. Going to the **Explore** catalogue, clicking on the specific program, then clicking the three dots (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-GMXN13NI.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-29T17%3A40%3A24Z&se=2026-10-29T18%3A40%3A24Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=0GMfht7mPlXAU10xYHmVVeJ3TxDdkycgQwFJlX%2FCMcE%3D)) in the top-right corner of the page and selecting **Edit program details**.

  2. Going to *Quick-access menu > Programs*, then selecting the program category containing the program to be cloned and clicking the cog icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-WQX6NKE0.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-10-29T17%3A40%3A24Z&se=2026-10-29T18%3A40%3A24Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=0GMfht7mPlXAU10xYHmVVeJ3TxDdkycgQwFJlX%2FCMcE%3D)) for the program.
2. 3. Select the components you want to copy from the following:
  - **Copy details**
  - **Copy content**
  - **Copy notifications**
4. Click **Clone**.

Note that program assignments and completion records cannot be cloned.

If you have the **Edit program** capability you can now configure the new program as required (users without this capability will instead see the **Overview** tab). By default the new program will be hidden. You can now update the **Full name** and **Short name**, and give the program a new **Program ID**.
