Achievement paths can be set up when you are creating a skill, or you can come back to the skill and add one at a later date. If you are adding the achievement path during creation, simply click the Achievement paths tab then follow from step 5 below, otherwise follow these steps:
Go to Quick-access menu > Skills.
Click the name of the skill framework containing the skill for which you wish to set an achievement path.
When the framework loads, click the name of the skill for which you want to set the path.
Click the pencil icon (
) next to the Achievement paths section. From the Add achievement path dropdown menu select the path you want to add (see Available achievement paths).
Click Apply changes when you are done.

Set up achievement paths in bulk
Instead of manually creating achievement paths for each skill in a framework, you may want to apply a set of achievement paths to multiple skills in a framework in one go. You can select a source skill from which you want to copy all of the achievement paths, then select the skills to which you want to apply those paths.
Where criteria-based achievement paths reference linked courses, other courses, or other skills, these will not be copied across, so you will need to additionally configure the courses or skills on those target skills. Where linked courses or child skills already exist, these will be automatically referenced if a Course completion: Linked courses or Proficiency in child skills achievement path is copied across. When bulk applying achievement paths, the path structures will be copied, but you may still need to review the target skills, especially if criteria-based paths are the ones being copied. Achievement paths that require further configuration are flagged in the interface with a warning message.
Any existing achievement paths on the target skill will be removed, and completely replaced with all of those from the source skill. The achievement paths are only copied once - any future changes to the original achievement path will not be copied to the target skills.
It's important to understand that this is a destructive action, as the configuration of any existing achievement paths on target skills will be overwritten and permanently lost, and this action cannot be undone. Achievements for any assigned users will be recalculated, and users may immediately achieve the skill if they have already met the criteria for the new achievement paths.
To apply a set of achievement paths from one skill to other skills, follow these steps:
Create a skill and set up at least one achievement path. This skill can then be used as the source for other skills, meaning you can duplicate this achievement path to other skills in the same skill framework.
Go to Quick-access menu > Skills and navigate to the skill framework containing the skill with the achievement path you want to copy, then select that skill.
Scroll down to the Achievement paths section.

Click the icon of two sheets of paper (
).On this page you can select the target skills to which you want to copy the source skill's achievement path. After finding the skills to which you want to apply the achievement paths, you may want to enable the Without achievement paths filter to remove any skills that already have achievement paths configured.
Select all of the target skills to which you want to copy the selected achievement path. You can click the arrow icon (
) to expand a skill and see its child skills, which you can select or deselect separately.Optionally click View selected to see a list containing only the skills you have selected as targets. Review the list, and click Back to all skills if you need to select more.
Click Apply if you're happy with the selected skills.
If none of the target skills currently have achievement paths, click Continue to copy the selected achievement path to the selected target skills. If any or all of the target skills already have achievement paths, click Replace all.
You will then be returned to the source skill page, and a message will appear at the top of the page to confirm that a task has been scheduled for the achievement paths to be copied when the cron next runs.
Note that while the task for applying the achievement paths is pending, you will be unable to edit the achievement paths for all target skills.

Available skill achievement paths
The following achievement paths are available for skills in Totara Skills.
Path | Description |
|---|---|
Learning plan | This allows backward compatibility for skills previously linked to learning plans. Note that Totara Learn is required to link skills to learning plans. For a skill to be assigned to a learner in Totara Skills it must be assigned via the skill assignment tool, and not just in the learning plan. |
Manual rating | Select one or more raters (including manager, appraiser, assessor (members of selected audiences), audience member, or self) who can manually mark the proficiency level for this skill in the user's skill profile details page. Where multiple raters are added to a single path, they will have the ability to overwrite each other’s ratings, i.e. individual ratings are recorded, but only the latest rating counts in terms of the overall achievement calculation. |
Criteria-based paths | For each skill scale value you can set criteria to achieve that level using the Add criteria group button alongside that skill scale value. Once you have added a criteria-based path option to a scale value, you can click the And button underneath the added criteria path to require users to complete both criteria. Alternatively, if you click the Add criteria group button alongside that same scale value, you can add an additional path option that the user can complete instead of the other one (Or). You can use the delete icon ( The different criteria paths are:

Performance activity rating | This achievement path supports rating skills via a performance activity. This feature is controlled from the performance activity, where a skill rating is provided from within a performance activity Skill review question element. This element uses the selected skill's rating scale and, on submission, passes the selected scale value to the skill. For the rating from the performance activity to be included in the skill’s achievement calculation, a Site Administrator must add the Performance activities achievement pathway to the skill. |
