# Configure HR import sources

In [HR import](/totara-20/docs/what-is-hr-import), the source refers to the data being imported into Totara. This should be configured for each enabled element before importing any data. As a Site Administrator, you can configure source settings for a specific element by following these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > HR Import > Sources.*
2. Select the element name.
3. Select the source option (either [CSV](/totara-20/docs/hr-import-csv-site-settings) or [External database](/totara-20/docs/hr-import-external-database-site-settings)).
4. Configure the settings accordingly.
5. Click **Save changes**.
