# Configure Totara Skills general settings

Site Administrators can configure a number of settings specific to [Totara Skills](/totara-20/docs/what-is-totara-skills). These settings are configured centrally and apply across the whole site.

To configure the general settings for Totara Skills, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to *Quick-access menu > Plugins* (/admin/plugins.php).
2. Under **Local plugins**, select **T****otara Skills**, then select **General**.
3. Configure the general settings (first enabling Totara Skills if it isn’t already enabled) as required.
4. Select **Save changes**.

## Totara Skills general settings

The following settings can be configured:

| Setting | Description | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Enable Totara Skills | Globally enables or disables Totara Skills across the site. | When disabled, end users will not be able to access Totara Skills features, and background processing is paused. Disabling Totara Skills does not remove or delete any stored data. |
| Allow attachments | Enables or disables the ability to add attachments to a skill. | - |
| Accepted attachment file types | A comma-separated list of allowed file extensions, MIME types, or file type groups. | Use *image/**, *audio/**, or *video/** to allow all files in those groups, or *** to allow all file types. |
| Maximum attachments per user and skill | Set the maximum number of attachments that can be uploaded for one skill and user. | - |
| Position groups | Defines position groups that can later be assigned to individual positions. Enter one group per line. | Positions are grouped accordingly on the [**Career path** view](/totara-20/docs/what-is-the-career-path-view). |
| Position recommendation limit | Sets the maximum number of positions that can be recommended to a user on the **Career path** view. | - |
| Thresholds configuration | JSON configuration controlling multiple visual elements in Totara Skills, including match level labels, career path view thresholds, and heatmap colours. | See [Configure the Career path view](/totara-20/docs/configure-the-career-path-view) for more information on the **aspirational_position_thresholds** and **career_path_thresholds** settings, and [Configure skills heatmap colours and thresholds](/totara-20/docs/configure-skills-heatmap-colours-and-thresholds) for more information on the **heatmaps_thresholds** setting. |
| My Skills columns defaults | Configure the default visible columns on the **My Skills** page for all users, using a JSON array of column IDs. | The default column array is: ["skill_name","preceptor_rating","self_rating","achievement_level","date_and_status","actions"] |
