# Custom access rule for main menu item

When [adding](/totara-20/docs/add-a-main-menu-item) or [editing](/totara-20/docs/edit-main-menu-items) a main menu item you can choose to set up a custom access rule. This allows you to control access to a main menu item based on role, audience, or one of the preset rules.

To set up a custom access rule, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Navigation > Main menu.*
2. Click the cog icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/cog.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A25%3A17Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A25%3A17Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=SwfIDF04g7me7%2B%2B97eNngHi6UqoSu%2F3s6G1Fa899%2FnY%3D)) next to the item you wish to edit.
3. Select **Use custom access rules** under **Visibility.**
4. Click **Save changes**.
5. Select the **Access** tab to define the access rule.
6. Select whether **all** or **any** of the **Restrict access** criteria need to be met to view the navigation item.
7. Fill in the criteria for the role, audience, and/or preset rule.
8. Click **Save changes**.
