Marker questions are keyboard-accessible. Use the tab key to move between the markers and the arrow keys to position markers. ![A drag and drop marker question requiring the Learner to place a marker showing where to click on a screenshot.](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1726234948221.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A42%3A09Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A42%3A09Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=rJ9PorCJibk%2FQRdja3POh%2BzREZYzAd1KBhl4QVJWoUs%3D) To set up a drag and drop markers question, follow these steps: 1. In the quiz activity, click **Add**, then select **a new question**. 2. Select **Drag and drop markers**, then click **Add**. 3. Give the question a name, then enter the question in the **Question text** field. 4. Set the **Default mark**, i.e. how many marks the Learner will be awarded if they answer correctly. 5. Click **Choose a file** or drag and drop a file to upload a background image. 6. In the **Markers** section, enter the text for each marker and set how many times each marker can be placed. Add extra, non-applicable markers to increase the difficulty of the question. 7. In the **Drop zones** section, assign a drop zone to each of the correct markers. Next, set the shape of each drop zone. 8. Hover over the map in the **Preview** section to [identify the coordinates](/totara-20/docs/drag-and-drop-markers-quiz-question#drop-zone-coordinates) you wish to use for each drop zone. Enter the appropriate coordinates in the **Drop zones** section, then refer back to the **Preview** image to check that each drop zone is placed in the correct position. 9. Either enter feedback for correct, partially correct and incorrect answers in the **Combined feedback** section, or use the **General feedback** field. 10. If required, configure the [**Multiple tries**](/totara-20/docs/drag-and-drop-markers-quiz-question#multiple-tries) and **Tags** sections. 11. Click **Save changes**. ## Drop zone coordinates After uploading a background image, you will be able to see grid lines and X and Y coordinates on your image. Each grid square is 10 x 10 px. How you set the coordinates will depend on the shape selected for each drop zone: - **Circle****:** centre_x, centre_y; radius e.g.: 130, 100; 50 - **Polygon****:** x1, y1; x2, y2; ...; xn, yn e.g.: 220, 60; 300, 60; 220, 100 - **Rectangle****:** left, top, width, height e.g.: 320, 60; 80, 40 ![The Drop zones section with a circle, polygon, and rectangle drop zone configured.](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1726234400783.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A42%3A09Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A42%3A09Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=rJ9PorCJibk%2FQRdja3POh%2BzREZYzAd1KBhl4QVJWoUs%3D) ![The preview showing the background image with the drop zone areas overlaid.](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-1726234418900.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A42%3A09Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A42%3A09Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=rJ9PorCJibk%2FQRdja3POh%2BzREZYzAd1KBhl4QVJWoUs%3D) ## Multiple tries Optionally set a score penalty for each incorrect try. Incorrect tries include the use of extra markers as well as markers placed in incorrect drop zones. If a drag and drop markers question is used in a quiz set to use the **Interactive with multiple tries** question behaviour, marking is modified as follows when a penalty has been applied: - The mark is reduced for each try by the penalty factor - Allowance is made for when a correct choice is first chosen providing it remains chosen in subsequent tries Three additional marking and multiple tries options are available (depending on the [quiz question behaviour](/totara-20/docs/configuring-quiz-question-behaviours)): - **Show the number of correct responses:** Include a statement of how many choices are correct in the quiz question feedback - **State which markers are incorrectly placed:** Include a list of markers which are incorrectly placed in the feedback - **Move incorrectly placed markers back to default start position below image:** When **Try again** is clicked, incorrectly positioned labels are removed ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_getting-started-with-quizzes.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T06%3A42%3A09Z&se=2026-11-06T07%3A42%3A09Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=rJ9PorCJibk%2FQRdja3POh%2BzREZYzAd1KBhl4QVJWoUs%3D)There are two courses in the Totara Academy about using quizzes in Totara Learn, [Getting started with quizzes](https://totara.community/course/view.php?id=639) and [Advanced quiz](https://totara.community/course/view.php?id=262) Using these courses you can learn more on how to use these features, see best practice, and give it a go yourself.
