# Edit main menu items

You may wish to make changes to an existing [main menu](/totara-20/docs/what-is-the-main-menu) item, whether it is a default item or a custom one you have added.

To edit a menu item, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Navigation > Main menu.*
2. Click the cog icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/cog.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A16%3A36Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A16%3A36Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=Kf6KW6McNdpPLOdr4G58%2BWsifzMsJ6akaeoySsEVQM0%3D)) next to the item you want to edit.
3. Make your desired changes to the [settings](/totara-20/docs/main-menu-settings).
4. Click **Save changes**.

If you have selected **Use custom access rules** for the **Visibility** setting, you can then set the access controls by following the instructions on the [Custom access rule for main menu item](/totara-20/docs/custom-access-rule-for-main-menu-item) page from step 5.
