# Link a course to a skill

You may wish to assign courses as a mandatory part of achieving a [skill](/totara-20/docs/what-are-skills-1).

To link a course to a skill, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Skills*.
2. Click the name of the skill framework containing the skill you wish to link a course to.
3. Click the cog icon ( ![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-UNGHH6VH.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A11%3A31Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A11%3A31Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=O9h3fqLUM8h8SZmYUs5YxtMR5jf98K5Qb0dD0UF%2F95M%3D) ) next to the skill.
4. When editing a skill item, click the **Linked courses** tab.
5. Click **Add linked courses**.
6. Browse or search for courses, then tick the box alongside one or more courses to add them.
7. Check the **Mandatory** box for a linked course to make the course mandatory in any learning plans. Note that this does not make the course mandatory to achieve the skill.
8. You can remove a linked course from the skill item by clicking the bin icon ( ![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/image-YG7TN2AL.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A11%3A31Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A11%3A31Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=O9h3fqLUM8h8SZmYUs5YxtMR5jf98K5Qb0dD0UF%2F95M%3D) ).
9. Once you've selected the required course(s), click **Save changes**.
