# Send an ad hoc message

Ad hoc messages are instant, one-time messages that you send out to a group of users associated with a [seminar activity](/totara-20/docs/seminar-activity).

Follow these steps to send an ad hoc message:

1. Go to the seminar activity for which you wish to send an ad hoc message.
2. In the **Seminar administration** block, click **Ad-hoc messages**.
3. Click **Add ad-hoc message**.
4. Complete the [settings](/totara-20/docs/ad-hoc-message-settings) and add the message content.
5. Click **Save**.

The message will be sent when the cron next runs (by default once a minute).

With the introduction of a modern, [centralised notification system for seminars](/totara-20/docs/using-centralised-notifications), we have separated ad hoc messaging from [legacy seminar notifications.](/totara-20/docs/seminar-notifications) This means that you can now use the ad hoc message feature to send instant messages to groups of users associated with a seminar.
