While the status of courses and programs on a learning plan will automatically update based on their completion settings as the learner completes them, you need to update skill and objective statuses manually. ## Setting a skill status in a learning plan As a manager you may need to change the status of a skill in a learning plan. This can be done by following these steps: 1. Navigate to the learner's learning plan. 2. Select the **Competencies** tab. 3. Set the skill status using the dropdown in the **Status** column (if you have the required permissions). 4. If you wish to edit the skill in detail and provide more information about the assessment you can instead click the bar graph icon (Set status) in the **Actions** column. 5. Edit the assessor details, assessment type, status, and completion details (including **Proficiency achieved** date). 6. Click the **Save changes** button. If the **Proficiency achieved** date is not manually set then it defaults to the time when the user first achieves a proficient status. If there are multiple proficient values in the skill it won't automatically update unless you select an unproficient value before saving the record and then reselecting a proficient value. ## Update a goal status in a learning plan As a manager you can update the status of a goal on an active learning plan by following these steps: 1. Navigate to the learner's learning plan. 2. Select the **Objectives** tab. 3. Set the goal status using the dropdown option in the **Status** column (if you have the required permissions). ![Course badge](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/course-badge_learning-plans.svg?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-06T07%3A41%3A24Z&se=2026-11-06T08%3A41%3A24Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=G1brUvXTzmDhCFaWHTmxvkB65YagRBlCq4Q0LqkPN%2Fs%3D)The Totara Academy has a whole course dedicated to using [Learning plans](https://totara.community/course/view.php?id=573) in Totara Learn.
