# View position insights

The position [insights](/totara-20/docs/what-are-insights) report provides an overview of the current state of a [position](/totara-20/docs/what-are-positions) in the organisation, including skills coverage, skills gaps, employees, candidates, and time to readiness.

To view the position insights report, follow these steps:

1. Select **Reports** from the main menu, then:
  1. [Create a new report](/totara-20/docs/create-a-user-report) using the **Totara Skills position** report source.
  2. Open an existing report that uses the **Totara Skills position** report source.
2. Edit the displayed columns and filters.
3. Configure the search and filter.
4. A list of positions will be displayed, with insights for each one.
5. Select a position name to view its details.
6. A side panel with insights opens.

At the top of the panel, the position name, position description, and business critical and strategic icons (if configured for the position) are displayed.

Directly below the position information, one or more insight messages may be displayed to highlight important information about the selected position. The conditions for displaying these insights are [configured by the Site Administrator](/totara-20/docs/configure-insights). Depending on the current data, the following insights may appear:

- **Low coverage:** A low percentage of employees are fully proficient in all skills assigned to the position
- **High coverage:** A high percentage of employees are fully proficient in all skills assigned to the position
- **Critical skills coverage:** Only a small number of employees are fully proficient across all critical skills
- **Critical skills gap:** One or more critical skills have no proficient employees
- **No candidates ready:** No suitable internal candidates currently meet the requirements for the position

### Position insights tabs

The following tabs are visible in the **Position insights** view.

| Tab | Description |
| --- | --- |
| Overview | Displays summary tiles for **Employees** (number assigned to the position), **Skills coverage** (percentage fully proficient in assigned skills) and **Skills gap** (percentage of missing proficiency). Each tile shows the current value compared against the last day of the previous month. Historical charts below the tiles show trends over time, with a year selector to view a different year. If not all tiles fit on screen, scroll horizontally or select **See all** to display every tile. |
| Employees | Displays employees assigned to the position and recommended candidates. A search field allows lookup by first name, last name or email address, and sorting options order users by their match to the position. Users are divided into **Assigned employees** (currently assigned to the position) and **Candidates** (recommended based on career path or skills match). Candidates may show an indicator that the position is part of their career path, or a **Perfect Match** label when they have a 100% skills match. |
| Time to readiness | Displays **Average Time to Readiness** and **Median Time to Readiness**, each compared against the last day of the previous month. Also includes a **Time to Readiness** insight highlighting the lowest-performing users, a distribution bar showing the percentage of users classified as **Fast**, **On-time**, **Slow** and **Not ready** based on the configured [time to readiness taxonomy](/totara-20/docs/what-are-time-to-readiness-taxonomies-1), and a historical chart of **Average** and **Median Time to Readiness** over time. A year selector allows viewing data for a different year. |
| Skills | Displays all skills assigned to the selected position, including **Position critical** or **Position strategic** icons where applicable, skill level distribution, and skills gap for each skill. A filter allows the list to be limited to all skills, critical skills only, or strategic skills only. |

> The thresholds and conditions used to trigger insight messages (such as low coverage or single point of failure) are configured by the Site Administrator and may vary between organisations.
