# Create a skill framework

Skill frameworks are hierarchical structures that allow you to organise your [skills](/totara-20/docs/what-are-competencies). A skill framework will contain multiple skills, which can be arranged into parent and child relationships as required, or kept at the same level.

As such, skill frameworks are used to break up skills into multiple groups based on topic, department, or other logical groupings.
