# Delete a main menu item

When customising your site's [main menu](/totara-20/docs/what-is-the-main-menu), you may wish to delete any [custom main menu items you have added](/totara-20/docs/add-a-main-menu-item). You will not be able to delete a custom top-level menu item until you have first removed (deleted or moved) the items sat underneath it.

Note that it is not possible to delete any of the [default main menu items](/totara-20/docs/main-menu-defaults). If you don't want users to see any of these items, you can [hide them instead](/totara-20/docs/hide-main-menu-items).

To delete a menu item, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > Navigation > Main menu.*
2. Click to cross icon ( ![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/thin_cross.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T18%3A10%3A24Z&se=2026-11-01T19%3A10%3A24Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=cMP08SZVgg4YJNCC56peXz4i5zrkSJ%2F6rprrJO0UJVY%3D)) next to the item you wish to delete.
3. Click **Delete** on the confirmation screen.

The item will now be permanently deleted from the site, and therefore no longer visible or accessible by any users.
