# Delete an event monitoring rule

If you decide that you no longer want or need an [event monitoring rule](/totara-20/docs/what-is-event-monitoring) then you can delete it. This will permanently remove it from the site and remove any subscriptions.

## From the site

As a Site Administrator you can delete event monitoring rules at the site level.

1. Go to *Quick-access menu >* *Server > Event monitoring rules.*
2. Click the cross icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/thin_cross.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T12%3A56%3A06Z&se=2026-11-01T13%3A56%3A06Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=0Ni6CnqqsHtrle14vodw8Sx374bQjjxHf6kWAYPLIPs%3D)) next to the rule you wish to delete.
3. Click **C****ontinue** on the confirmation screen.

The rule will now be deleted from the site.

## **From a course**

As a Trainer you can only delete monitoring rules that were created at the course level.

1. Go to the course in which you wish to delete a rule.
2. From the **Administration** block go to *Course administration > Reports > Event monitoring rules.*
3. Click the cross icon (![](https://cdn.document360.io/a007399b-031e-436b-999a-528240e16f58/Images/Documentation/thin_cross.png?sv=2026-02-06&spr=https&st=2026-11-01T12%3A56%3A06Z&se=2026-11-01T13%3A56%3A06Z&sr=c&sp=r&sig=0Ni6CnqqsHtrle14vodw8Sx374bQjjxHf6kWAYPLIPs%3D)) next to the rule you wish to delete.
4. Click **C****ontinue** on the confirmation screen.
