# Enable a filter

As a Site Administrator you can enable filters, so that they can be [applied to the content](/totara-20/docs/apply-a-filter) on your site.

To enable a filter, follow these steps:

1. Go to *Quick-access menu > P**lugins > Filters > Manage filters .*
2. Choose **On** from the **Active?** dropdown menu for any filters you want to use.

By choosing **On** you will enable to filter to be applied across the site. You can instead choose **Off, but available**, meaning the filter is not available across the site, but can be enabled at the course or activity level (Totara Learn) by a Site Administrator or Editing Trainer.
