# Reserving and allocating seminar spaces

Where a seminar activity has been set to **Allow** **manager** **reservations**, Staff Managers (i.e. users with direct reports) can reserve or allocate spaces for a seminar event for members of their team.

[Reserving spaces](/totara-20/docs/reserve-spaces-in-a-seminar) allows managers to secure a pre-determined number of spaces on a session for their team. This is helpful when it is not yet known who will be attending from a team. Managers can also [reserve seminar spaces for other managers](/totara-20/docs/reserve-a-seminar-space-for-another-manager) if required.

[Allocating spaces](/totara-20/docs/allocate-spaces-in-a-seminar) allows managers to assign a pre-determined number of spaces on a session for specific members in their team.

To be able to **Allocate** or **Reserve** spaces, a manager needs the relevant permissions and capabilities in the context of the course.
