# Restrict access based on groups

If you have [set up groups](/totara-20/docs/create-groups) in a course, it is possible to [restrict access](/totara-20/docs/restricting-access-to-course-activities) to an activity to members of a certain group or any group.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the course and select **Turn editing on**.
2. Click **Edit** next to the activity for which you want to restrict access.
3. Expand the **Restrict access** section and click **Add restriction**.
4. You can select whether the learner **must** or **must not** match the specified completion criteria.
5. Select **Group**.
6. Select the relevant **Group** or **(Any group)** from the dropdown menu.
7. Then click **Save and display** or **Save and return to course** to confirm your selection.

You can also click the **X** delete icon to cancel without saving.
