# Restrict access to course sections

Instead of [restricting access to individual activities and resources](/totara-20/docs/restricting-access-to-course-activities), you may want to restrict access to a whole section (e.g. a topic or week section).

Follow these steps to restrict access to a course section:

1. Go to the course and select **Turn editing on**.
2. Next to the topic for which you want to restrict access, select **Edit**, then **Edit topic**.
3. Expand the **Restrict access** section.
4. Add your restrictions as you would for an activity.
5. Click **Save changes** when you're done.
