# Restricting access to course activities

## Setting up restrictions

Before you can set up any restrictions in your courses you will need to [enable restrictions](/totara-20/docs/enable-restrict-access).

You can set up restrictions based on the following:

- [Activity completion](/totara-20/docs/restricting-access-based-on-activity-completion)
- [Date](/totara-20/docs/restricting-access-based-on-date)
- [Grades](/totara-20/docs/restricting-access-based-on-grades)
- [Groups](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-based-on-groups)
- [Groupings](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-based-on-groupings)
- [User profile information](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-based-on-user-profile-information)
- [Audiences](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-based-on-audiences)
- [Positions](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-based-on-positions)
- [Organisations](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-based-on-organisations)
- [Preferred language](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-based-on-language)

You can also [create nested sets of restrictions](/totara-20/docs/create-nested-restriction-sets) that use multiple restriction types. Alternatively you can [restrict access to entire sections](/totara-20/docs/restrict-access-to-course-sections) of your course.

You can optionally choose to [hide any content from users that are unable to access it](/totara-20/docs/hide-restricted-content).

## Deleting an item used for activity restriction

When you delete an activity, audience, organisation, or position that is used in the access restrictions of an activity or a section, it is marked as (**missing**). The condition is no longer fulfilled to prevent unauthorised access to the activity.

A Course Creator needs to either remove or alter the restrictions in the edit page.
