In a multiple choice question, Learners are asked to identify the correct answer from a selection of possible options. Multiple choice questions can be configured with one or more correct answers, with a (positive or negative) score defined for each possible answer.
To set up a multiple choice quiz question, follow these steps:
- In the quiz activity, click Add, then select a new question.
- Select Multiple choice, then click Add.
- Give the question a name, then enter the question in the Question text field.
- Set the Default mark, i.e. how many marks the Learner will be awarded if they answer correctly.
- Configure the other general settings as required.
- Enter each answer in the Choice fields, and add the corresponding feedback for each answer. If you don't want to provide specific feedback for each answer, either use the General feedback field or the Combined feedback section. You can add more answers by clicking Blanks for 3 more choices.
- Use the dropdown to set the Grade weighting for each answer. See Configuring grades for more information.
- If required, configure the Multiple tries and Tags sections.
- Click Save changes.
Configuring grades
For questions with more than one correct answer, divide the full mark (100%) between each right answer. If users are able to select multiple answers, you should give any incorrect answers a negative weighting - otherwise the user could select every answer and still score 100%. For example, say you had the following question: 'Which colours appear on the American flag?'. The three correct colours (red, white and blue) would each give the user 33.33% of the score. Any negative answers (e.g. yellow) should be given a weighting of -100%, so the user will receive a score of 0 if they select the wrong answer, even if they also selected the three correct options.
