What are career paths?

Prev Next

The Career path page is an employee-facing component of Totara Skills, connecting skills, positions and career development into a single structured experience. It helps employees understand possible next steps within their organisation and plan a route towards an aspirational position.

Rather than presenting a simple list of roles, career paths allow employees to see which positions are realistically within reach, compare their current skills against position requirements, identify development gaps, and select a path towards a future role. This gives employees clearer, more practical guidance on career progression than a static role catalogue can provide.

Site Administrators can configure how the Career path view behaves and how information is displayed to employees. In the Totara Skills general settings, Site Administrators can change:

  • Match score thresholds: The match score shows how closely an employee's current skills align with the skills required for a given position. The match score thresholds determine how positions are grouped into columns.

  • Career path algorithm: The algorithm compares users’ assigned skills and achievement levels with the skills associated with other positions. It takes into account which skills overlap, the achievement levels for those skills, and which skills are missing to determine possible career paths.

How the view works

The Career path view has two main states, depending on whether the employee has already selected an aspirational position (the future position the employee wants to work towards).

Explore your career possibilities

When an employee opens Career path without having selected an aspirational position, the view displays recommended positions the employee may want to work towards. Only positions that share at least one skill with the employee's current skills are displayed.

Each position shown includes a match score, indicating how closely the employee's current skills align with the skills required for that position. Positions are arranged into columns according to configurable match score thresholds, allowing the organisation to determine how career possibilities are visually grouped.

When the employee selects a position, a side panel opens with further details about that position. Where suggested paths are available, the employee can compare them and choose one to follow.

Your career path

Once an employee has chosen an aspirational position, the Career path view changes from an exploration view to a personal development view. In this state, the employee can see:

  • Their next step on the path

  • The match score for the next step

  • Their aspirational position

  • The skills required for the position

  • Courses and learning resources related to those skills

  • Their full current path, including each step and the related match score where it can be calculated
