Using career paths

Prev Next

The Career path page allows a learner to review their progress towards an aspirational position within the organisation. It displays the next step in the learner's career path, along with the skills and resources associated with that step, and shows how the learner's current achievement compares against the requirements of the position.

Learners can manage their own career path from their profile, while managers and other authorised users can manage career paths on behalf of team members, provided they hold the required permissions.

View your own career path

Users can manage their own career path by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to Develop > Career path.

  2. If no aspirational position has been selected yet, you can review the suggested positions and select one.

  3. If you have already selected an aspirational position (or another user has selected a position for you), the current career path is displayed. Here you can review the steps required to reach your aspirational position. You can click Change aspirational position to select a different aspirational position.

View another user's career path

Users with the required permissions (such as Staff Managers) can manage another user's career path on their behalf by following these steps:

  1. Navigate to the user's profile and open their Skills page. Alternatively, select the user in the team heatmap or organisation heatmap.

  2. Click the three-dot icon ().

  3. Select Career path to view a page listing the user's best-matching positions.

  4. Select Aspirational position to view the user's current career path.

Set an aspirational position

A user’s aspirational position is the target role they are working towards. When reviewing career paths, users or their managers can select an aspirational position by following these steps:

  1. When viewing your own career path or another user’s career path, review the user's best-matching positions.

  2. Review the matching percentage, which indicates how closely the user's current skills match those associated with each position. Positions are arranged in columns according to their matching score, from highest to lowest match.

  3. Select a position to view more information. In the side panel, check the details of the selected position.

  4. In the How to get into this position section, review the suggested paths leading to the selected position.

  5. At the bottom of the panel, explore the skills and resources associated with the position.

  6. Select the path the user should follow, then click Set as aspirational.

Once an aspirational position has been set, the page reloads and the selected path is displayed on the user's Career path page.

If a skill is already assigned to the user, their current achievement level for that skill is displayed alongside it in the panel.

Using the career path page

The Career path page displays a banner showing the next step in the learner's career path. Below the banner, the skills and resources related to that step are listed.

  • Where a skill is already assigned to the learner, their current achievement level is displayed

  • Clicking a skill name opens the skill side panel, showing the skill details

  • Where a skill is not assigned to the learner, it can be assigned directly from this page

The banner allows switching between career path steps. When a different step is selected, the list of skills and resources reloads to reflect that step.

Steps in the career path do not advance automatically once a learner reaches a 100% score match for a step. Where a change of position is required, the learner should contact the person responsible for career progressions within their organisation.

Editing a career path

After a career path has been set up, you can manually edit the steps in the career path by following these steps:

  1. While reviewing a career path, scroll down to the Full path section and select Edit path.

  2. In the position side panel, the current path and alternative suggested paths are displayed.

  3. For the current path, you can:

    1. Add another position by clicking Add position.

    2. Delete a position by clicking the X icon ().

    3. Reorder positions by dragging and dropping.

  4. Alternatively, you can replace the current path entirely by selecting an alternative path and clicking Switch path.

  5. Select Save changes to confirm your changes.

The aspirational position cannot be removed or moved, and positions already achieved cannot be removed. If switching from an edited path to a pre-generated path, the edits made to the previous path are not saved.

Assigning a skill from career path

  1. Navigate to your own career path, or another user’s career path.

  2. In the skills list, select a skill marked as Not assigned.

  3. In the side panel, click the three-dot icon () and select Self-assign or Assign.

  4. If available, select the learner's current level and optionally select a target level.

  5. Confirm the assignment.

If Self-assign is not available, the skill has not been configured for self-assignment. If Assign is not available, the skill has not been configured to allow assignment to other users.
