Configure tenant-specific notifications

Prev Next

If you are using multitenancy and have multiple tenants set up on your site, you can configure the centralised notifications that will be sent for each tenant.

To configure notifications at the tenant level, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Quick-access menu > Tenants.
  2. Select the tenant for which you want to configure notifications.
  3. In the Administration block, click Notifications.
  4. You can then review and configure the notifications for the selected tenant.
  5. You can create a new notification by clicking Create notification for a trigger with no existing notifications, or by clicking the icon of three dots () for the event to which you want to add a notification, then selecting Create notification.
  6. You can also edit any inherited notifications by clicking the icon of three dots () for the notification, then selecting Edit.
  7. Additionally you can enable or disable notification triggers using the Enabled toggle. If you disable a notification trigger at the tenant level it will not be available for any lower context levels within the tenant.
Note that each tenant will inherit all notifications from the site level, meaning any changes to site-level notifications will also affect tenant notifications. If you create or edit any notifications at the tenant level, these changes will be inherited to lower contexts, such as courses or workspaces that sit within that tenant. See What are centralised notifications? for more information on notification inheritance.
By default only Site Administrators and Site Managers have the totara/notification:managenotifications capability, which is required to configure notifications. If you want Tenant Domain Managers to manage notifications at the tenant level, you will need to assign this capability to the Tenant Domain Manager role.

Course badgeThe Totara Academy has a whole course dedicated to Notifications in Totara. Here you can learn more about how to set up and use centralised notifications, see best practice, and give it a go yourself.
