Multi-year recertification sequences allow you to plan how a learner renews a certification over several cycles. Instead of repeating the same content every year, you can define a sequence of paths (for example, an initial programme followed by year-specific refreshers) and choose where learners return to when each cycle ends.
These sequences support flexible return points, so you can decide whether learners loop back to year 1, progress to year 2, or re-join at a specific stage after a lapse.
Use multi-year sequences when you need to:
Vary the learning requirements across years (e.g. alternating refreshers)
Control what happens after completion or lapse (loop, advance, or reset)
Align certification expiry with a specific date each year
Avoid duplicating separate certifications for each year
Once configured, learners follow the defined sequence automatically, with due dates and validity periods calculated from your certification period, recertification frequency, and any fixed date rules.
Configure the recertification sequence
A certification can include multiple paths that define the initial certification and any subsequent recertification sequences.
To set up a certification with recertification sequences, first you need to ensure you have created two or more paths for your certification.
On the right side of the Paths list is a graphic showing the certification sequence:
The solid line represents the order of paths in the certification and recertification sequence
The white dots show the individual paths a learner completes within the multi-year sequence
The arrows indicate the looping sequence followed after the final path is completed

In the example shown above:
The learner first completes LMA Award initial certification, which is valid for one year
For the first recertification, the learner completes LMA Award Stage 1 recertification (valid for one year)
For the next recertification, the learner would complete LMA Award Stage 2 recertification (valid for one year)
After completing the final path, the learner returns to LMA Award initial certification, repeating the same sequence for future recertifications
In the next example, the multi-year recertification sequence for the learner occurs at a different point.

The learner first completes LMA Award initial certification, which is valid for one year, and only required to be completed once within the certification
For the first recertification, the learner completes LMA Award Stage 1 recertification (valid for one year)
For the next recertification, the learner completes LMA Award Stage 2 recertification (valid for one year)
After completing the final path (LMA Award Stage 2 recertification), the learner loops back to LMA Award Stage 1 recertification, where the learner’s multi-year recertification sequence cycles through LMA Award Stage 1 recertification and LMA Award Stage 2 recertification
Create a multi-year recertification sequence
To create a multi-year recertification sequence:
Ensure there are two or more paths created for your certification.
Click the three dots (
) within the blank path (one directly above your first course path) and select Move down, repeat this as necessary. You can also select Move up if required.
Once the multi-year sequence has been positioned, the arrows within the graphic will indicate the cycle the learner will follow during their certification and recertifications.
