Totara AI features introduces a suite of intelligent tools to enhance productivity, engagement, and personalisation across your Totara site. Powered by OpenAI, these features can support learners, content creators, facilitators, and administrators by streamlining tasks, enhancing content, and generating insights—all while reducing manual effort.
Once AI is enabled on your site, you can choose which features to activate and configure them to suit your needs. Each tool is designed to integrate seamlessly into existing workflows in Learn, Engage, and Perform.
Totara AI features
Below is an overview of the AI features available in Totara, including how each can be used and the value it offers. You can find more detailed information about each feature on the related page.
AI form assistant
The AI form assistant works within the Weka editor and provides three powerful tools to help users work with content quickly and creatively:
Summarise
Creates a concise summary of existing content in the editor.
Benefit: Saves time by summarising long content for quick understanding or reuse.Generate
Produces a new block of text based on a prompt.
Benefit: Helps content creators quickly draft content such as course introductions or descriptions.Generate image
Generates AI-created images from user prompts directly within the editor.
Benefit: Adds visuals to content without needing separate image creation tools.
AI goal assistant
The AI goal assistant helps learners in Totara Perform to create SMART goals. It guides the user through a series of reflective questions and generates a well-structured goal.
Benefit: Supports learners in creating clear, actionable objectives aligned with personal or organisational development.
Learners access the AI Goal Assistant when creating a new goal via Develop > Goals.
AI knowledge check-in
Available alongside other user-generated items like resources and surveys, the AI knowledge check-in feature helps facilitators create informal quizzes from uploaded files. The AI generates multiple-choice or true/false questions based on the content.
Benefit: Encourages reflection, boosts engagement, and identifies knowledge gaps in an anonymous, low-pressure environment.
This feature is accessed via the Create new option when adding a resource or playlist in a workspace.
AI image generation (Standalone)
In addition to the in-editor image generation, a dedicated AI image generation tool is available anywhere image uploads are supported (e.g., course settings).
Benefit: Allows consistent, styled images to be generated directly within content areas—ideal for enriching learning content.
AI course tag recommendations
You can enable and use AI tag recommendations for courses. This feature uses a Totara integration with OpenAI to recommend tags to add to each course, based on the information included within that course. This tool will only suggest existing tags, and will not create new ones. If you have tags in multiple languages, this tool will only suggest tags in the user's preferred language.
AI-powered recommendations
Totara’s AI-driven recommendation engine directly into the learning catalogue via the Recommended for you block. This block includes content types that are personalised and recommended for the user, i.e. Courses (default), Micro-learning, Workspaces, Programs and Certifications (that have self-enrolment enabled).
The Recommendation engine transforms interaction data, user attributes, and content metadata into intelligent recommendation for users. It supports different use cases depending on available data and personalisation needs.
Summary
Totara AI is designed to enhance the learning experience by integrating helpful AI-powered tools into everyday tasks across Totara. Each feature is optional, configurable, and intended to support users in creating, consuming, and managing content more effectively.
Once enabled, you can manage individual features and their settings from the Manage AI page under Quick-access menu > Development > Artificial Intelligence.
